Fanfare for Barcs - Army Field Band Horns
For this post, even though I'm a little late, I wanted to celebrate International Womens Day. only 16 percent of the military are women, so they deserve some recognition. for this piece today, I wanted to feature "Fanfare for Barcs" by Kerry Turner, performed by the United States Army Field Band Horn section.
The “Fanfare for Barcs” was written in 1989 for the American Horn Quartet to commemorate their overwhelming success at the 4th International Philip Jones Brass Chamber Music Competition in Barcs, Hungary. The exuberant rhythms and tightly woven motives are quite typical of the composer’s style.

The Performers:
"The women of The United States Army Field Band's horn section present Fanfare for Barcs by Kerry Turner. This ensemble was featured on March 31, 2020 on our livestream series, We Stand Ready, to honor the strength and resilience of female Soldiers past and present.
Performed by Sgt. 1st Class Selena Maytum and Staff Sgts. Kaci Cummings, Lori Roy, and Jennifer Kempe"
This piece is a classic Kerry Turner composition. He uses lots of layering in his writing and the opening there is almost constantly played throughout the entire piece. I think the recording itself could've been a little cleaner, but its live music so the fracks are to be expected. They are all great player and performed this piece amazingly.
I *LOVE* this piece, I'm so glad you were able to feature it on your blog! Have the horns from other military bands ever gotten together and recorded like this? The sections are all filled with such strong players, these are a great opportunity for them to show off!
ReplyDeleteThis Horn quartet sounds amazing! I hope we will have female military band in China in the future! Thank you for sharing this!
